Visiting with therapy dogs at Point Pleasant

Category: General

Pt Pleasant Therapy Dog 009 For many of the PSC residents, sensory activities like therapy dog visits are amongst their favorite activities. We observe their heart rates calmly dropping and raising in response to gazing at the dog or being guided with hand over hand assistance to pet the fur or to have their hand licked. Some children with contractures are able to calm their movements and smile for short periods of time in response to a dog’s presence. There are a couple children who we never saw smile until a dog visited with them on grounds for the first time. Some of our children have conditions that impair their vision significantly and for those children, it is unclear how much and how clearly they are able to see, but because their hearing and sense of touch are fully functional, they really enjoy being visited by therapy dogs.
